EU-Project: UNITES

UNITES is the seventh project in a series conducted by integrating cities. Integrating cities is a partnership with EUROCITIES, the network of European major cities and the European Commission.

EU-Project: UNITES

UNITES stands for Urban Integration Strategies through co-design.

Led by EUROCITIES, the network for major European cities, the UNITES project has the following objectives:

  • Improving integration outcomes through collaborative development of integration strategies with stakeholders, citizens, and vulnerable migrants
  • Training integration practitioners in the administration in co-design processes through various forms of learning and the exchange of best practices
  • Promoting citizen participation, including migrants, in shaping the integration strategy
  • Raising awareness of the benefits of a whole-of-society approach to integration

The Project

The Project

The project builds on experiences of past projects (CITIES GROW, MIXITIES, DIVE, INTI-Cities, ImpleMentoring, VALUES) and aims for equality, integration of migrants, and recognition of the diversity of European populations, which had become commonplace, especially in large cities.

Additional goals include connecting municipalities and organising mutual visits among the eight partner cities. This aims to establish new or enhance existing partnerships between cities, as well as between cities and volunteer organisations.

The individual project phases consist of:

  1. Development of a training on co-design in integration strategies, based on current research and best practice models from European cities.
    a) Implementation of the pilot version of the training with the 8 partner cities
    b) Progression towards a freely accessible Massive Open Online Course (MOOC)

  2. Development of a local integration strategy in collaboration with stakeholders and migrants
    a) Reviewing an existing or establishing a new multi-stakeholder coordination structure for the local integration of migrants and refugees
    b) Creating a new or updating an existing integration strategy
    c) Development of measures through citizen participation with special emphasis on participation of vulnerable or endangered migrants
    d) Exchange of municipalities from European States (online workshops/local visits)

  3. Presentation of the updated version of the MOOC at the 11th „Integrating Cities” conference

  4. One of the “Integration Champions” will act as a mentor for two external partners. The two-year collaboration with the UNITES partners will culminate in the creation of tools with shared standards and examples of best practice. The tools are intended to be made available to all interested municipalities as a guide

UNITES is the seventh project in a series implemented by Integrating Cities. Integrating Cities is a partnership between EUROCITIES, the network of major European cities, and the European Commission. The project is Co-funded by the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF).
