Opera and dance
The Deutsche Oper am Rhein (German Opera on the Rhine) is a cooperative effort between the cities of Düsseldorf and Duisburg, i.e. they stage productions together and perform them locally. This method has been working for 60 years, with both classics and the so-called “young opera” or ballet. The latter has been particularly successful under the management of the Ballet Director and Head Choreographer Martin Schläpfer.
Another point of call for dance and music in Düsseldorf is the Tanzhaus NRW (NRW Dance House), where modern choreographers get the opportunity to show what they can do – from the dance theatre to the hip-hop festival.
Düsseldorf, the Music City
Schumann, Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Brahms lived and conducted in Düsseldorf in the 19th century. They forged Düsseldorf’s reputation as a city of music. Today, classical music is nurtured mainly in the Tonhalle (Music Hall), the Robert-Schumann-Saal and the chamber music auditorium of the Palais Wittgenstein. The Robert Schumann Musikhochschule (College of Music) also holds regular concerts.
