Discover the Media Harbour

The former Rhine harbour has undergone a drastic transformation: where silos and warehouses used to form the skyline of the harbour district, today, there are building complexes designed by nationally and internationally renowned architects. The MedienHafen (Media Harbour) is home to numerous companies, mainly from the fields of media and communication, fashion and architecture, as well as art and culture. The harbour owes it special charm to the mix of “old and new”: the old quay walls, the steps and rail tracks of the old loading line have still been preserved and are classified as historical monuments.

Architectural highlights

With their artistic constructions, internationally renowned architects, such as Steven Holl, David Chipperfield and Frank O. Gehry, have as much of a presence in the Media Harbour as leading regional architects. The Stadttor (City Gate) is without a doubt a real eye-catcher. The imposing steel and glass structure is a landmark and an integral part of the modern skyline in the Media Harbour. The Kniebrücke road bridge, the Landtag (State Parliament), the Rheinturm (Rhine Tower) and the harbour high-rises like the Gehry buildings add to the range of architectural masterpieces. Since 1999, the Gehry buildings have been an icon of Düsseldorf and are always an impressive sight with their tilted walls and inclined towers.

Tours around the Media Harbour

The impressive contrast between modern architecture and buildings classified as historical monuments can be best discovered on a tour around the harbour. There are guided tours, each with different themes; the Medienbüro (Media Office) puts together the tour based on individual agreement. During the passenger ship season from April to October, you can combine a trip around the city with an excursion to the Media Harbour.
