Bridgerton, Downton Abbey, Stolz und Vorurteil – das Theatermuseum zeigt die Videoinstallation Elephants in Rooms, die von der Faszination der Popkultur für die Vergangenheit geprägt ist. Vom 24. März bis 7. Mai ist die, zuvor nur in Berlin gezeigte, Installation im Hofgärtnerhaus zu sehen.

Vierzehn Bildschirme laden die Besucher*innen dazu ein, beim Blick durch fremde Fenster in andere Welten zu entfliehen. Ob in Berlin oder Bangalore, Sheffield oder Shenzhen – insgesamt vierzehn Künstler*innen befinden sich alleine in ihren Wohnzimmern vor Fenstern und spielen Szenen aus Kostümfilmen nach. In den selbst aufgenommenen Videos treffen Alltag und Filmgenre in absurder Weise aufeinander. Die Installation Elephants in Rooms bringt diese einzelnen Videos zusammen. Im 15-Minuten-Takt der Szenen entspinnt sich so ein Dialog zwischen den verschiedenen Bildschirmen. Verteilt auf drei Ausstellungsräume können Besucher*innen bei einer Tasse Tee und auf Sofas in der zweistündigen Installation verweilen. Der Einstieg ist jederzeit möglich.

Seit mehr als 25 Jahren gastiert das international renommierte Performance-Kollektiv Gob Squad in bekannten Theaterhäuser wie dem Public Theatre in New York oder der Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in Berlin. Seine Inszenierung Before Your Very Eyes war 2012 zum Berliner Theatertreffen eingeladen.

In Kooperation mit dem Forum Freies Theater wird zum Eröffnungswochenende der Installation am 24. und 25. März die Performance Super Night Shot gezeigt. Zusätzlich zu Elephants in Rooms wird ein weiterer Ausstellungsraum dieser Performance – der mit fast 200 Aufführungen legendärsten Arbeit des Kollektivs – gewidmet sein. Nach der Düsseldorf-Premiere von Super Night Shot ist dann im Theatermuseum das sogenannte Hauptquartier für den „Kampf gegen die Anonymität der Großstadt“ mit Kostümen, Requisiten und mehr zu erleben.

English: Bridgerton, Downton Abbey, Pride and Prejudice – the Theatermuseum Düsseldorf presents the video installation Elephants in Rooms, which is influenced by pop culture’s nostalgic fascination for the past. The installation was devised by the collective Gob Squad in cooperation with artists from India and China and was previously only exhibited in Berlin. It can be visited from 24 March through 7 May at the Hofgärtnerhaus.

Fourteen screens invite visitors to gaze into different windows and thus escape into other worlds. Whether in Berlin or Bangalore, Sheffield or Shenzhen – a total of fourteen artists are acting alone in their living rooms. They are situated in front of their windows and reenact scenes from period dramas. The videos were self-recoded by the artists and display the absurd clash between everyday life and the genre of period drama. The installation Elephants in Rooms connects these different videos. Consequently, there is a dialog between the different screens every 15 minutes. The exhibition spreads over three different rooms and visitors are invited to enjoy the 2-hours-long installation by roaming the rooms or by sitting down on the couches with a cup of tea. There are not any concrete starting points for the videos, hence visitors can simply start watching when entering the exhibition.

For more than 25 years, the internationally renowned performance collective Gob Squad has touring their performances to well-known theatres worldwide such as the Public Theatre in New York or the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in Berlin. In 2012, they were invited to perform their production Before Your Very Eyes at the Berliner Theatertreffen.

In cooperation with the Forum Freies Theater (FFT) the performance Super Night Shot will be shown during the exhibition’s opening weekend on the 24 and 25 March. Furthermore, next to exhibiting Elephants in Rooms, another one of the museum’s rooms will be dedicated to Super Night Shot. With almost 200 shows, Super Night Shot is the most legendary work of the collective. After the opening of Super Night Shot in Düsseldorf, the Theatermuseum will become the so-called headqurarters for the “fight against the anonymity of the city”, displaying costumes, props, and much more.

Elephants in Rooms ist eine Produktion von Gob Squad in Zusammenarbeit mit Zhao Chuan, Lynn Fu, Alice Hu, July Yang, Anuja Ghosalkar, Bhavana Rajendran und Sharmistha Saha. Gob Squad Arts Collective erhält Förderung im Rahmen der Konzeptförderung 2020–2023 des Landes Berlin, Senatsverwaltung für Kultur und Europa.
