International Day on Living Together in Peace

The United Nations General Assembly established the International Day on Living together in Peace in 2017 to empower cities to celebrate and further establish peaceful coexistance and social cohesion among their inhabitants. The International Observatory of Mayors on Living Together in cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization‘s (UNESCO) International Coalition of Inclusive and Sustainable Cities (ICCAR) initiative organize worldwide events throughout May 16th each year to mobilize global communities to promote diversity, solidarity, tolerance and freedom of speach.

On this day several local and global initiatives come together to highlight their contributions to combating issues that arise in modern society such as discrimination as well as encouraging the development of more inclusive, healthy and resilient communities.

In 2019 on the International Day on Living Together the chief diversity officer of the city of Düsseldorf – Jana Hansjürgen – travelled to Paris among representatives from cities like Montreal and Strasbourg to join a UNESCO roundtable discussing how to ensure peaceful coexistance when people of different religions, sexual orientations, cultural and social background unite in pluralistic socities. The Mayor of Düsseldorf – Thomas Geisel – also took part in this special event via a video message:
