Testtrack for automated drivingin Düsseldorf

“Automated driving” can be tested in real conditions in Düsseldorf soon. The relevant funds of over €1.5 million have been approved by the Federal Transport Ministry.

It involves twelve partners with test vehicles and system makers for vehicle components and transport technology as well as telecommunications companies. The research organisations are RWTH Aachen, the Centre for Aviation and Space Travel (DLR) and Potsdam Technical University.

A key focus is on the interaction of several driver assistance functions in real driving situations. This interaction is to be studied in terms of conflicts in the control system and the resulting harmonisations.   The Düsseldorf test area covers the A57 motorway via the A52, Brüsseler Straße (B7), Heerdter Dreieck, Vodafone Campus, Rheinalleetunnel and the roads in the Friedrichstadt district via the Rheinkniebrücke. Vodafone is contributing its own applications at its German head office site and ensuring common and reliable communication, which is a key requirement for automatic driving.

The project partners are:

  • State Capital of Düsseldorf
  • Landesbetrieb Straßenbau Nordrhein-Westfalen
  • SWARCO Traffic Systems GmbH
  • GEVAS software Systementwicklung und Verkehrsinformatik GmbH
  • ave Verkehrs- und Informationstechnik GmbH
  • Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. (DLR)
  • Siemens Aktiengesellschaft
  • Vodafone GmbH
  • Mobileye Germany GmbH
  • Rhineland-Westphalia Technical University Aachen
  • TRW Automotive GmbH
  • Potsdam Technical University

The total project volume is around nine million euros. The “KoMoD” project has a term of 25 months up to June 2019 and will start immediately. The funding volume for the State Capital of Düsseldorf is around €1.5 million.
